When you decide that you want to buy a new car, you likely have to figure out what you are going to do with the old one. There are several things that you can do with your old car, depending on what shape it is in. 

Donating to Charity

One of the things that you can do is to donate your car to charity. Public radio stations and some charitable organizations will take the donation of unwanted vehicles to help in their fundraising. There are other organizations that will take your old car, repair it, and then donate it to people in need. If you are going to do that, you can get a write-off on your taxes. 

Car Buyers

Another thing that you can do is to sell your old, non-functional, or unwanted car to a company that specializes in buying vehicles like that. When they get the car, they will evaluate it to see what they should do with it. Many things could happen to your old car. One thing they could do is to repair it and put it up for sale. They could also choose to strip any viable parts from it. Doing that will allow the company to offer the parts as salvage or secondhand parts to people who are looking for those kinds of parts at a lower price than they may otherwise be able to get. The company may also decide to just scrap the car altogether and sell it for the weight of the metal it contains. 

Trade-In

If your car is still in relatively good shape, you may be able to trade it in at the car dealership where you are buying your new vehicle. If you do that, you should be able to get a better price on the car you are buying. The dealership will look at your vehicle, what shape it is in, what model year it is, how much mileage it has, and so forth to determine the actual value of your automobile. Once they have done that, they can tell you what they think it's worth and then let you know that number so that they can take it off the purchase price of your new car. 

Buying a new car is a good thing. But you may have to get rid of your old car before you can get your new one. There are many ways that you can do that.
